CHURCH CHALICE ECCLESIASTICAL
An exceeding rare circa 1875 sterling silver Church chalice by Peter L. Krider, of Philadelphia, and retailed by Robinson Clark & Biddle, with a stepped up base and central column supporting a large cup. the interior of the cup is gilded. SEE BELOW FOR EXPLANATION OF INSCRIPTION. Dimensions: 8 inches tall 4 1/8 inches diameter at top of cup. Weight 20 ozs. Marked as illustrated in photo.
The cup has the following engraved dedication/monogram: Emily Root / Maggie Reedes / 1875 / "In the midst of life, we are in death." and on the opposite side of the dedication/monogram there is an engraved cross.
"In the midst of life we are in death" is meant to mean that death is part of life. It is from the Book of Common Prayer, The Burial of the Dead, First Anthem. It was often used on the tombstones of children and those individuals that died suddenly.
The kneeling woman resembles a skull when seen from a distance, reflecting that in the midst of life, we are in Death.
