HOLLOWARE by Frank W. Smith
| CANDLESTICKS STERLING SILVER 1895 Fine pair of circa 1895 sterling silver candlesticks by Frank W. Smith Silver Co., Inc., of Gardner, MASS, the bases finely chased in a rococo, wave-like motif, the column and base masterfully engraved and bright cut, with removable bobeches. Weighted. Dimensions: diameter of base 7 inches; height 9 3/4 inches. There are armorials: at left is a stork, regardant, holding in its claw a pebble of the sea-shore. Burke attributes the motto 'Non Dormit Qui Custodit' which seller believes means 'One Doesn't Sleep When One Cares'...to Shore of Norton Hall. The bearer's right (dexter), the correct position for a husband. On the wife's side is: a demi-lion rampant, holding in the paws an olive branch stalked and leaved vert. Possibly for an heiress of Offley of Norton Hall. There are records of these two families marrying centuries ago. The senior branch of Shore changed their name to Nightingale. Some of the the junior branches stayed in England, others went to Ireland, Canada and America. For example, Alfred Enest Show was born 1871 in Ontario, died 1951 New York having raised his family on Lon Island. Marked as illustrated in photo. Price: $4,145.00 |
