STERLING SILVER JUDAICA HORSE RACING TROPHY

A rare circa 1963 sterling silver horse racing trophy by Shreve of San Francisco, bearing the inscription of a particular equestrian event, The Benjamin F. Lindheimer Handicap at Arlington Park Race Track in Arlington Heights, Illinois in 1963. Weight 40 oz. Dimensions 9 3/4 inches high by 7 inches in diameter. Inscribed as illustrated in photos. Marked as illustrated in photos. In excellent condition.

The Arlington Park Race Track did order special order trophies from Shreve in the early 1960's. The trophy is hand fabricated the flying jettisons on the cover and box are all hand fabricated. The stone between the box and base is red jasper. Many trophies are traditional--in the shape of a vase, cup or trophy shaped, and not as unique and interesing design as this trophy. The piece is very architectural and modern. (There will be an article in Silver Magazine in the January/February 2009 issue about a Cyborium which also incorporates red jasper, and the designer may very well have designed this trophy.)

Jewish American racing executives included Benjamin F. Lindheimer (1890-1960), a well-known philanthropist in the Chicago, Illinois area. In 1966, members of his family funded the Lindheimer Astrophysical Research Center, (previously the Dearborn Observatory) at Northewestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Without a doubt La Troienne (La Troienne b.f. 1926 (Teddy - Helene de Troie, by Heicon). Sire Line Bend Or. Family 1-x.) was the most famous and influential broodmare in twentieth century America. She was bred in France. Champions tracin g to La Troienne include a horse raced at the Benjamin F. Lindheimer Handicap.
